2024 Ford Explorer vs. 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee

The Ford Explorer has long been the quintessential family SUV and has set the standard for family haulers since the early 90s. Its legacy continues today as a ruggedly styled, powerful, high-tech SUV for modern families. Compared to popular rivals like the Jeep Grand Cherokee, it's more affordable and capable and doesn't sacrifice the features you love. Discover why the new Ford Explorer is our top choice at Crouse Ford.

Jeep Grand Cherokee

Performance

The Ford Explorer is more powerful and efficient than the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Available with two levels of power, starting with a 300-horsepower four-cylinder engine and a 400-horsepower turbocharged V6 as an available upgrade. The Jeep Grand Cherokee has a 293-horsepower base engine and a 375-horsepower plug-in hybrid for 4xe models.

Your gas dollars will go further in the Ford Explorer, which has an impressive EPA rating of 21 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway in its most efficient form. The Jeep Grand Cherokee gets 19 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway with its base V6 and rear-wheel drive. Most versions of the Jeep Grand Cherokee can tow up to 3,500 pounds, but every Ford Explorer equipped with the tow package can handle up to 5,000 pounds.

Design

The Ford Explorer and Jeep Grand Cherokee are ruggedly styled SUVs with impressive off-road capabilities. While base models will provide a practical layout and accommodations, the interior gets fancier and more luxurious as you move up the trim level ladder. The biggest difference between the two SUVs is that the Ford Explorer offers a standard third row, bumping up the passenger capacity to six or seven. The Jeep Grand Cherokee is a two-row SUV only.

Technology

The Ford Explorer has plenty of modern tech to fit your busy, connected lifestyle. An eight-inch infotainment touchscreen comes standard with the option to upgrade to a 10.1-inch screen. Standard features include smartphone integration, a Wi-Fi hotspot with upgrades like voice-activated navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system to entertain passengers. The Jeep Grand Cherokee offers similar features but is overall more expensive than the Ford Explorer.
